is this personal, this vendetta you're seeing today against chuck hagel? >> you know, i don't know if it's personal or not, but i think it is important for us to set a standard for the american people because we need to keep our comments civil. we need to be respectful because that then plays for the rest of the country. >> like you do, senator. thank you so much. jeanne shaheen of new hampshire. we have more reaction to the hearing now from peter beinart, editor of the daily beast. you're always interesting to watch. here is lindsey graham, one of the amigos you might say, not an amigo of hagel, also grilling the witness. listen to how he went after his past reference to, quote, the jewish lobby. let's watch. >> name one person in your opinion who is intimidated by the israeli lobby in the united states senate. >> well, first -- >> name one. >> i don't know. >> well, why would you say it? >> i didn't have in mind a specific person. >> name one dumb thing we've been goaded into doing because of the pressure from the israeli or jewish lobby. >> i have alrea

so is chuck hagel. i find myself disagreeing with senator kerrey on occasion, but i think he is in the mainstream of thinking and will do a good job for the country. i don't vote against nominees very often. senator obama to me if we use this standard, i think we would all be in pretty good shape over here and vote a lot. the we're not. at the end of the day, it is just not the vote about the iranian revolutionary guard but a series of votes and statements that paid a unusually disturbing picture. there is the left lane in politics, the right man to man the middle-income and when it comes to some of the iranian israeli issues there is the chuck hagel lane. he is in the league of his own. there is nobody with this kind of a series of votes in the series of statements. it's is not one thing. i see dumb things every day. it is a series of things, a series of votes, and edge about him that makes many of us very unnerved about his selection to a time when the world is on fire. ferias a contagion will take th

this was a debacle for chuck hagel today. if his nomination is defeated, we'll look back and say this was the place where it went down in flames. not only was he not able to defend many of his earlier statements, but he demonstrated a lack of command over the subject matter that he would be responsible for if confirmed. he couldn't identify what the obama administration's policy was. i think one of the telling exchanges changes when he first said that he supported containing a nuclear iran. someone hands him and a note and reads the note, i guess i misspoke. we don't have a policy on containing a nuclear iran and senator levin has to tell him, we do have a policy. we're not in favor of containment. we want to prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon in the first place. the senator hagel can't even get that right, i think it really left his supporters on that committee very shaken about the case they now have to make. >> greta: he seemed woefully ill prepared. it was he was anti-israel and made the statement in the 12 years
